New Bike Lanes on Grand St. East of Essex
A new bike lane has appeared almost overnight on a stretch of Grand St near Essex Crossing.
For a couple of days, the original street markings were blacked out, replaced temporarily by thin lines printed with chalk.
A large traffic message sign just east of the busy Clinton and Grand St. intersection has also been placed to warn west-bound drivers of a new rule: no right turn on Grand towards the Williamsburg Bridge. Not like that's made anyone change their behavior, mind you, but murmurs from the CB3 Full Board Meeting tell that police enforcement for rush hour is likely to come into play sooner rather than later. Granted, I too have never seen a car get ticketed in New York City.
Micro-mobility riders were handed a win here: a mostly uninterrupted parking protected bike lane on Grand St. stretching from St. Mary's Catholic Church to Essex St was added. On one block, between Essex and Norfolk, only one car lane remains.
These combined changes mean an enhanced pedestrian and cycling experience - especially on that Clinton-Grand intersection - but is likely to cause greater congestion in the short term along the entire M14A bus route south of Delancey.
