New Bakery 'Elbow Bread' to Take Over Prominent Dimes Square Corner
Mel's opened their new location 100 miles away in Hudson, New York in December.
After the neighborhood's disappointing loss of Mel The Bakery in April 2023, a new bakery will soon call 1 Ludlow home.
Elbow Bread, a project from Court Street Grocer's Eric Finkelstein and Matt Ross, in partnership with esteemed baker Zoë Kanan, will open this Spring. The name is no doubt an ode to the junction of Division and Canal Streets. According to Eater NY, the bakery will focus on "breads and baked goods with a Jewish bent" and will offer sandwiches and sausages.
Mel the Bakery was forced to close mid-2023 due to the $5 million sale of the 4-story building. Renovations have been taking place at the site for several months. A new coat of white paint has recently replaced the royal blue that had come to define the storefront, but any progress has surely stalled following the shattering of one of the two main windows facing east.
As for Mel's, they opened their new location 100 miles north of New York City in Hudson, New York in December.
