@melthebakery at 38 Canal St./1 Ludlow will be no more, the store announced on its social media channels on April 9th. With the forthcoming sale of the building, valued at over $5 million, it seems likely that a buyer has been found. The bakery is looking for a new home, yet unknown if it will remain in the Lower East Side.
The bakery called the corner unit home for nearly three years and with it came its signature and now familiar blue exterior trimmings.
Before Mel's arrival, the storefront was vacant between 2017-2011, and before that, a Chinese computer repair shop (3rd pic).
Although it's aways a concern, I doubt that the 1910 building will be demolished to make way for a taller one. The lot seems too small for that kind of investment. However, I can't find any way of learning the building height maximums of the lot, which I'm sure would contribute to such a decision. One thing is for sure - it's not landmarked. Just like 99% of our neighborhood's buildings.
Mel the Bakery's last day here will be on Sunday the 16th. I encourage you to look at their latest post detailing their move!
As for the address, there seems to be some debate. Google maps has the address listed at 1 Ludlow, which sounds better than the 38 Canal NYC's Zoning Map has it labeled at.
