Welcome Café Colmado to the neighborhood, specifically to 286 Broome Street, where the coffeeshop has been serving coladas and espressos for a bit over a month since they soft-opened on September 22nd.
The space is a mix of modern American design and traditional Hispanic homeware. You'll find that bright scarlet red from their storefront sign scattered around the interior, often giving it a retro diner look. Some of the furniture may feel familiar to anyone who's stepped foot in an abuelita's living room. There's an old fashioned couch in the entrance and some classic old-timer lounge chairs in the back with the plastic wrap still on (hilarious). I assume the wrap will remain for authenticity's sake. It's missing a lot of seating, but according to the nice barista attending my order, new (old?) tables and chairs are on their way.
There's a gorgeous outdoor space in the back also worth taking advantage of once those new seats come in.
Word of the day is 'colmado', meaning 'grocery store' in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
Imma keep it real though, charging $4 for an alfajor de maicena is criminal. Sorry, I said it. Someone had to.

Best of luck to the operators!
The space was most recently an e-bike repair and rental shop.
NYC Planning website shows that the building dates back to 1900, but nearly all buildings I've recently written about say 1900, so I'm wondering if there's an error.
