First Look at New Building at 11 Essex St and a View of What it Replaced
A new 9-story building is coming to Essex Street, with recent filings revealing its shape and amenity spaces.
Eight total apartments are included - likely to be condos - along with a 765 sq ft rear yard and a 100 sq ft accessible rooftop. Commercial space is included on the first story.
For the most part, nothing out of the ordinary here. However, this one hurt, as the slow, persistent removal of the Lower East Side's architectural heritage continues.
The victim? A six-story brick tenement building dating to 1907 that had two storefronts and a well-preserved cornice. The building was bought for $11.4 million in 2017.
Demolition is way past us - the gap along the block can be found on Google Streetview as early as August 2021.
Hopefully those neighbors next door with the windows facing the back are enjoying their new, albeit temporary, sunlight and views of the street.
