DOT To Install Red-Light Camera on Delancey-Clinton Intersection Following Chris Marte and Grace Lee Letter
Will it be enough? No. But it's another (baby) step in the right direction.
NYC DOT's Acting Manhattan Borough Commissioner announced on August 19th that DOT plans to install a red light camera in the vicinity" of the Delancey-Clinton intersection located at the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge. No indication on which way the single camera will target. The decision was communicated in a letter to City Council Member Christopher Marte and Assemblymember Grace Lee, who had sent a joint letter to DOT in early August regarding local "traffic safety concerns."
Definitely a step in the right direction for one of the Lower East Side's most poorly managed and planned intersections. There are at least a dozen more that merit this treatment. Bowery and Houston, Houston and A/Essex, Houston and Chrystie, and the king of them all, Delancey and Essex. Other than the Canal Street area, I can't think of a single intersection south of Central Park where drivers give less of a shit than on East Houston or Delancey.
If you think Delancey-Clinton is bad now, just look at some of these before pictures. What were we as a society doing in 2009? And in 2012? Today I learned that the low barriers on Delancey-Clinton were installed in 2012. I thought they were a leftover from the brutalist and anti-pedestrian 1970s. I can't believe someone designed, approved, and built those in the 21st century.
