327 Broome Filed for Demolition; Streetview Reveals Business There Lasted More Than 80 Years
An unexpected surprise when looking through old street pictures.
On February 2nd, 2022, Santiago Helman of H&O Engineering filed an application for the full demolition of 327 Broome St. The two-story commercial building dates back to 1920, according to StreetEasy.
On Google Streetview, the site was most recently home to a jointly occupied pair of galleries. Jack Hanley Gallery was one of them, which may have moved to either 177 Duane St in Tribeca or to East Hampton on Long Island. The other was Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, which also moved to Tribeca at 7 Franklin Place. Both were still there as of 2018, but the next available Streetview in 2022 shows a heavily graffitied and abandoned space.
Before becoming a gallery, the space hosted Greenberg Display, a store selling display items, such as mannequins and stands. What is an objectively ugly storefront quickly fascinates, however, because a 1940 photo of the same address reveals the exact same store! Since 1940 or earlier this company had been selling display items from the same place near the Bowery!
There are no open applications for a new building as of today, but we will let you know when we see it.

Launching a neighborhood outlet in such a dynamic area means certain events and developments that were in the works before our existence are only recently being brought to our attention. They are newsworthy, however, so some of the upcoming articles will cover developments that came into being in the past year or two years.
