2024 Presidential Election Results: Insights and Surprises From The Lower East Side
Just gonna warn you, there's a lot to unpack here, but go ahead and sift through the data.
There's this and a lot more where it came from. Check the link to see the spreadsheet version of my data.
Introducing the 2024 Presidential Analysis for the Lower East Side (defined by being east of the Bowery and south of Houston). We've got dozens of stats for your viewing pleasure courtesy of an amazing interactive map put together by the Election Atlas team at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
There's an easy message gathered from this data - the Lower East Side is no different than the rest of the country. While remaining firmly Democratic (74% voted for Harris), the neighborhood shifted 8 percentage points to the right since the 2020 election, with Trump increasing his raw vote count by 31%. His gains are where Democrats hate to see it most - areas defined by their working class, often immigrant populations switched their votes to Trump at the highest proportions in the neighborhood.
Electoral Districts comprised of Baruch Houses, Confucius Plaza, and Knickerbocker Village shifted significantly rightward, at rates of 12%, 13%, and 14% respectively. Democrats only saw one district shift leftward - a single building of the Seward Co-op. It went 3% more for Kamala.
Of the 46 electoral districts in the Lower East Side, 27 of them shifted more than 10 points rightward. Incredible!
The areas that shifted the least were more or less as consistent. All major co-op communities, from Hillman, East River, Seward, to Amalgamated had among the top ten least dramatic shifts toward Trump.
And if you were wondering, yes, there was one district that Trump won. The west complex of Knickerbocker Village provided Trump's ONLY electoral district win in the entirety of Manhattan over his past three elections. It was his best performing district of the neighborhood in 2020, when he got 36% of the vote, and he just squeezed through a majority this time at 51%.
